Yoga Mantra
OM SAHA NAVAVATU SAHA NAU BHUNAKTU SAHA VEERYAM KARAVAVAHAI TEJASVI
NAVADHITAMASTU
MA VIDVISHAVAHAI OM SHANTI, SHANTI, SHANTIHI
This Shanti Mantra is taken from the
Krishna Yajurveda Taittiriya Upanishad. It talks about how a teacher student relationship needs to
be.
It is usually recited in schools as prayer before the start of the classes in schools.
It is also a widely accepted practice to chant this mantra at the start of yoga training
sessions.
It is a great mantra that signifies Togetherness. It says we are all each other’s
teachers and students. A teacher can also learn lot of things from his students. So the mantra
seeks Gods blessings for the teacher and students to learn together in peace. The meaning of the
mantra is thus:
OM SAHA NAVAVATU Om, May God Protect us Both (the Teacher and the
Student),
SAHA NAU BHUNAKTU May God Nourish us Both,
SAHA VEERYAM KARAVAVAHAI May we Work Together with Energy and
Vigour,
TEJASVI NAVADHITAMASTU May our Study be Enlightening ...
MA VIDVISHAVAHAI ...and not give rise to Hostility,
OM SHANTI, SHANTI, SHANTIHI Om, Peace, Peace, Peace.
This mantra
can also chant on your own when undertaking a project or undergoing personal study. This prayer
brings in help and blessings from your teachers even if a physical teacher is not seated in front
of you. It is a chant or mantra that protects the sacred relationship of student and teacher. It
is a mantra for study.
God, Parham Brahma, formless and supreme, is regarded as ultimate
teacher. This sacred mantra is an invocation asking for his protection and guidance.
It is
together that we have yoga and union. If we try to accomplish something on our own we may not get
very far. The mantra tells us the importance of team work.
